World Kindness Day | How To Spread Some Extra Kindness
November 13th is World Kindness Day and we don’t think this could be any more relevant in these difficult times, especially with a few of us going back into a second lockdown. In honour of this, we thought we’d put together some tips on how to make your world a kinder place, because who doesn’t want that!
CHECK IN ON YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Times are strange and everyone copes differently. Some people might be loving the extra time at home and some people might be climbing the walls. This World Kindness Day, see if you can use this time to call that awesome friend you met traveling that you don’t normally have time to catch up with. The smallest things can make a big difference; sending a text to someone who is struggling could make their whole day by letting them know you were thinking about them. We know everyone is over the Zoom quiz by now but how about you spice it up with a virtual Gin tasting night or use Netflix Party to watch a movie with your friends in different houses? There’s even a chat feature so you can bombard your mates with your questions when you have no idea what’s going on.
BE KIND TO YOURSELF
Whilst you’re checking on your friends and family, make sure that you don’t forget to check in on yourself. It can be so easy to focus on other people and work and everything else that’s going on but don’t forget about you. Self care is essential, whether it’s a global pandemic or not and everyone’s version of self care is different. If your way of coping is to be as productive as possible and make the most out of having the extra time, that’s great! Start that online business or bake 12 loaves of banana bread! However, you don’t need to be uber productive if you don’t want to be and there’s nothing wrong with that either. If you want to binge watch an entire series of Killing Eve in 1 day (and let’s be honest, who hasn’t?), then that’s what you should do. You do you. Relax in a hot bath surrounded by scented candles and the bubbliest bubbles whilst eating your 3rd cookie of the day, and don’t forget to enjoy every second of it.
VOLUNTEER
Have you ever volunteered? Are old memories of working in a charity shop to get your Duke of Edinburgh award being stirred up? Now is the perfect time to rethink volunteering and find a cause you’re passionate about at the same time! Don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing wrong with working in a charity shop, if that’s what you’re passionate about then get ringing those items up. However, if that doesn’t sound like the avenue of volunteering for you, there are plenty of other exciting opportunities out there too. If all that trash you walk past on the way to the shops bothers you, why not get out there and do a clean-up? If you’re more of a people person and love a good chat, now is a great time to reach out and volunteer to be a telephone friend to the elderly and lonely. If you want to combine volunteering with an adventure, there’s hundreds of different volunteering holidays on offer, post pandemic, of course. You’ll get a tan, explore a new place and make a difference all at the same time! Now, that sounds like our kind of holiday! This World Kindness Day, have a think about what you could do to help someone else out.
BE KIND TO THE PLANET
We don’t know about you but being stuck inside for months on end has made us really appreciate all those times when we were in nature; hiking up a mountain, kayaking down a river or even just hearing the birds tweeting in your local park. We all want to protect our environment as much as we can and there’s loads of simple changes we can make in our daily life to help. Swap single use makeup wipes for reusable bamboo pads, buy a reusable water bottle instead of plastic ones and even invest in reusable pots for leftovers instead of using cling film, making it easier to bring in to work the next day and also saving you money! Kerching! If you’re a meat eater, how about implementing ‘Meat Free Mondays’ into your diet? Being more sustainable can be so simple and easy that you won’t even notice, but you’ll be making a huge difference, and isn’t that a great feeling? If you’re keen to learn some more tips and tricks on this, check out our blog post on travelling more sustainably here.
These are all awesome things you can implement into your life for World Kindness Day. Being kind isn’t something you should do on one day of the year, or even just because we’re in a global pandemic! But it’s a great time to start thinking about what you can do to make the world a kinder place. If we’ve missed anything you think should be on this list, let us know!
