How to Plan Your Backpacking Trip
Backpacking is a wonderful way to see the world with friends. Carrying everything you need on your back, you’re self-reliant and free to go where you please. To make your adventure a success, you need to plan carefully, do your research and tick some important boxes. Here’s how to plan your backpacking trip so that you remember it for all the right reasons.
-
CHOOSE YOUR COMPANIONS CAREFULLY
Before you decide where you’re headed, you need to decide who is going to accompany you. Make sure you can rely on each other and have similar interests and values. There’s nothing like a backpacking trip to make or break a friendship!
-
PICK YOUR LOCATION
Decide what you want to get out of the trip as this will heavily influence your choice of destination. Is your main goal to explore tropical beaches or cultural monuments. Do you want to hike a well-known mountain trail or canoe across the country?
-
TIMING
The timing of your trip will affect a number of factors. Travelling in peak season may offer the best weather, but the cost of air, bus and other expenses will likely be higher than in off-peak season. If you’re on a budget, you may want to choose the latter. Do some research on weather patterns so you don’t find yourself swamped by torrential rains or sweltering in the unbearable heat.
-
DECIDE ON ROUTES
You know where you’re going and when so now you need to finalise the routes you’ll take when you get to your destination. This is when you’re going to hit the internet to find out what other backpackers have done and get feedback on attractions to see, accommodation and potential pitfalls on your chosen route. Take your time to do this step thoroughly and establish a Plan A and a Plan B in case anything goes wrong. Give yourself a little flexibility so you can adjust your route plan and itinerary if need be.
-
DO THE IMPORTANT ADMIN
Find out if you need any permits to travel within your chosen destination. This is crucial as in some countries, you can find yourself in all kinds of legal trouble if you don’t have the required documentation.
The second important admin task is to ensure that you have medical insurance for the duration of your trip. This is crucial in case you have an accident or get injured in some way. Your medical insurance should cover your medical costs and in the worst case scenario, your evacuation to your home country for treatment.
-
CHECK YOUR GEAR
What you pack will depend on where you’re heading and in which season.
Ask your travel agent for a list of gear you’ll need for your trip and again, do your research online and talk to other backpackers.
