How to Get from Tokyo Airport to the City Centre

Japan is currently experiencing a surge in popularity as a top travel destination, celebrated for its rich culture, advanced technology, and stunning landscapes. If you’re eager to explore Japan, you’re in for an amazing experience. Most of our tours kick off in Tokyo, a vibrant city known for its unique mix of tradition and modernity. With its stunning temples and busy streets, Tokyo offers countless areas to explore.

One of your first steps on this epic journey will be making your way to your accommodation—follow our instructions below depending on whether you’re staying in the delightful district of Nippori or the vibrant area of Asakusa.

Step 1: Arrive at Tokyo Airport (Narita or Haneda)

Tokyo is served by two main airports—Narita International Airport (NRT) and Haneda Airport (HND). Both are well-connected and offer multiple transportation options to the heart of Tokyo.

Step 2: Choose Your Transportation Mode

From Narita International Airport (NRT)

Option one to Nippori:

Keisei Skyliner

• Time: Less than 41 minutes
• Cost: ¥2,470 ($23 USD)
• Details: The fastest way to Nippori. Follow signs to the Keisei Skyliner at the airport. Purchase a ticket from the vending machines or at the counter. Take Skyliner from Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station straight to Nippori station west exit then it’s a 10 mins walk from Nippori Station to the accommodation.

Option two to Asakusa:

Train (Keisei Limited Express & Tokyo Metro Ginza Line)

• Time: Approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes
• Cost: ¥1,280 ($12 USD)
• Details: Follow the signs that say ‘Train’ & ‘Keisei’ Direct – Keisei Access Express OR Keisei Main Line to Asakusa station then it’s a 10 mins walk from Asakusa Station to the accommodation

From Haneda Airport (HND)

Option one to Nippori:

Tokyo Monorail + JR Yamanote Line

• Time: ~35 minutes
• Cost: ¥690 ($6 USD)
• Details: Take the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho Station, then transfer to the JR Yamanote Line towards Nippori. West Exit is the closest to the hotel on our tours which is 5 Mins walk to the accommodation.

Option two to Asakusa:

Toei Asakusa Line
Time: Approximately 50 minutes

• Cost: ¥780 ($7 USD)
• Details: Take Asakusa Subway Line by Keikyu
• Railways direct to Asakusa Station A4 exit then it’s about a 5 Mins walk from Asakusa station to the accommodation.

Step 3: Navigating the Stations

Stations in Tokyo can be busy, but don’t worry—clear signage in English will guide you. Look for signs indicating your train line and platform number.

Step 4: Purchase Your Tickets

You can purchase tickets at vending machines or counters. *Tip: the vending machines have English making this a pretty easy option! Transport around the city during the tour is already paid for in your tour price, so you don’t need to purchase a travel card, just a ticket for this initial journey. However, if you arrive a few days early, have extra time in Japan once the tour is over or know you want to do a lot of exploring in any free time then you can pick up a travel card (SUICA or PASMO) at the airport upon arrival.

Step 5: Enjoy the Journey

While on your way to the city, take a moment to soak in the views. Travelling by train in Japan is a comfortable and often scenic experience.

Step 6: Arriving

Nippori is famous for its traditional charm and textile town, Yanaka Ginza. When you arrive, you’ll find yourself amidst narrow streets lined with quaint shops, cafes, and temples—a perfect start to your Tokyo adventure!

If your first accommodation is in Asakusa, you’ll be greeted by the awe-inspiring Senso-ji Temple, one of Tokyo’s most revered landmarks. The atmosphere is charged with excitement and history, where markets and charming stalls let you indulge in local snacks and explore souvenirs, making it the ideal spot to kick off your unforgettable Japanese adventure!

Tips and Things to Look Out For

• While English signs are common, knowing a few basic Japanese phrases can be helpful.
• If you arrive at the airport before 5 am or after midnight, you’ll need a taxi to reach central Tokyo. You can book a shared taxi via “govoyagin.com,” though it might be more expensive. For shuttle service, search “Haneda Airport” or “Narita Airport Shuttle Transfer for Central Tokyo” on their website. The shuttle runs 24/7.
