8 Top Tips For An Enjoyable Plane Journey During Your Travels

Jun 16, 2021 | Popular Reads, Travel Tips

Before the pandemic, flying to a new destination was one of the most popular things in the world. During March of 2019, the average number of flights taking off per day around the world was a whopping 176,000; that is an insane number! Although the number of flights has dropped dramatically since then, we know people will be so excited to get back on a plane when the time comes!

Travelling to a new destination is something a lot of us look forward to, but flying itself is often the part that most people dread. Whether you have a fear of flying or just find being on a plane uncomfortable; you are not alone. However, we’ve come up with 8 tips to help you get the most out of your plane journey!

1. Dress comfortably

One of the most important things to remember during a flight is to wear your most comfortable clothes. There is nothing worse than sitting on a flight in tight jeans and a leather jacket! Trust us, we’ve been there and it just isn’t worth it. After about 20 minutes you will probably start to feel pretty uncomfortable and if you’re on a long haul flight, you’re in for a restless flight.

Choosing to put your joggers on and a comfy hoodie is one of the best ways to make your flight more comfortable. You can even pack some fluffy socks or small slippers to get super cozy. If you are going to remember any of these tips when it comes to flying, then make sure you remember this one! It can honestly make all the difference.

2. Make sure you have plenty of entertainment to keep you going

Some flights do offer in-flight entertainment but it depends which airline you fly with. It’s a good idea to check on the airlines website whether they come with an inbuilt screen or Wi-Fi. If you are flying on a cheap budget airline, the likelihood is that you won’t have the opportunity to watch movies and play games in flight.

The only way around this is to make sure you download videos, episodes from netflix or have Spotify on your phone or tablet. It’s the best way to make your time go quick on a long haul plane, otherwise time can go pretty slowly.

3. Pick your seat carefully

There are pro’s and con’s of which seat you decide to book when flying. When you go to book your seat, there are some you can choose with extra legroom as there are no seats in front of you. If you want nobody to sit behind you (which means you won’t get that annoying person who likes to kick chairs) you will be looking to choose a seat at the very back of the plane. However, although these are great seats they are often situated right next to the toilets so beware of the smell.

If you decide to pick the window seat, you will get amazing views but when you need to go to the toilet, you are going to be clambering over everyone else. It’s not so bad if you are flying with family but if you are sat next to strangers it can be quite awkward. If you choose the aisle seat it will be great if you need the toilet and you do have a little bit more leg room to play with. However, the other people sitting next to you will also inevitably need the toilet at some point and you will be the one getting clambered on. If you are sitting in the middle seat, there are essentially no benefits. Although the window and aisle seat do have their negatives, it’s still best to go for one of these over the middle seat. As you can see there is a lot to think about when picking your seat on a plane journey, so weigh up the pro’s and con’s!

4. Bring an on flight hygiene kit with you

There is nothing worse than getting halfway through a flight and starting to not feel fresh. This is where your hygiene kit comes in! No matter the distance or time of your flight, bringing toiletries with you can really help make a plane journey more comfortable.

To help you not feel like a zombie once you get off your flight, there are a few things you should pack. Face wipes are the first choice so you can give your face a good clean and freshen up; especially if you are flying at night time. Packing mints and chewing gum will act as a substitute for not being able to clean your teeth properly and a small hairbrush will help you detangle your mane of hair. One more thing to pack is deodorant or at least some body spray as this is another great way to freshen up during a flight.

5. Carry a small blanket or jumper with you to keep warm

We all know the air con on flights can be cold and intense. Although some airlines will offer free blankets, and some will even offer them for a price; It’s a good idea to just bring something with you if you have the space.

If you have a really large hoodie that you can wrap yourself in or even just a small blanket that you can attach to the side of your backpack; it will do you the world of good. One of the quickest ways to get uncomfortable on a flight is to get chilly, so it’s definitely something you want to avoid! It’s also much easier to sleep if you have something you can wrap around yourself, and get cozy in.

6. Charge your electronic devices before you board

When catching a flight you will often find that the plane doesn’t have the facilities to charge your devices onboard.

If you are on a long flight you are going to want to use your phone, tablet or laptop for some entertainment. That might be to play games or watch some of your favourite series. Imagine your disappointment when your device runs out half way through the flight. Charging your devices beforehand avoids this and will keep you busy. If you have a phone or a device that runs out of battery quickly, then it’s a good idea to invest in a good portable battery to get you through.

7. Bring some snacks onboard

Onboard snacks from the food trolley on the plane are always massively overpriced. By taking your own snacks on board, not only can you save money on the quite often ridiculous prices, but you can also take exactly what you want. There is nothing worse than getting hungry on a flight and not being able to get the food you like, especially when it costs more too.

Hard sweets or chewing gum can also help you when the plane takes off and lands. By sucking on a sweet the pain you feel in your ears is reduced making for a much more comfortable experience.

8. Stretch your legs

This is one of the top tips when it comes to a comfortable plane journey; especially if you are on a long haul flight. The worst thing you can do on a long flight is to just sit down the whole time, because you will be unbelievably stiff when you go to exit the plane!

If your plane journey is over 4 hours, and especially if you are flying to a destination over 10 hours away, you need to get up and move. Of course you will need the toilet at some point, but even if you don’t want to take another trip down the middle aisle then it’s a good idea to at least stand up and have a good stretch. If you don’t you will feel it the next day and it won’t be pretty!

Flying isn’t always the most fun experience whilst travelling, but without it we wouldn’t be able to get to those beautiful destinations! Wearing your jogging bottoms, being able to freshen up during your flight and having plenty of entertainment to keep you going can all make for a more comfortable flight.

We know that travelling by plane isn’t too popular at the minute and a lot of people are holidaying at home, but hopefully flying to far away destinations isn’t too long away. If you want a comfortable plane journey during your future adventures, then make the most out of these tips. If you’ve got any more tips for a long haul flight, then drop them in the comments below.
