Best Things to Do in South Korea During Your Free Time on the Essentials Tour

Jul 24, 2025 | South Korea

Got a few free hours while travelling in South Korea? Don’t spend them indoors! The One Life Adventures’ Essentials itinerary strikes the perfect balance between guided experiences and personal exploration in 10 days. Whether you’re wandering through ancient tombs or tucking into sizzling street food, your free time is a chance to dive deeper into the local culture.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve got you. Here are some of the best things to do during your free time in South Korea, featuring top local attractions, food recommendations, and hidden gems from our Essentials itinerary.

Days 2 & 3 – Explore the Best of Seoul in Your Free Time

Welcome to Seoul, the metropolitan city of South Korea! After meeting with your tour group on the first day, you’ll begin the second day by visiting the HiKR, the K-Wave museum, where you can learn about the history of K-Wave and experience it. With the rest of the day free, now’s your chance to tick off some must-see places in Seoul.

Shop like a local (or a celebrity) on Gangnam’s bustling main street, snap a few photos at the Starfield Library inside COEX Mall, or unwind at Bongeunsa Temple, a calm oasis in the heart of the city. Film buffs can catch a blockbuster at the world’s largest IMAX Laser cinema, while nature lovers might rent a bike and cruise along the Han River at Yeouido Hangang Park or hop aboard an E-land Cruise.

If you’re seeking a cultural experience, the National Museum of Korea offers world-class exhibitions, and admission is free! Looking for trendy bites? Head to Ikseon-dong for chic cafes and boutique shopping, or visit Mangwon Market to try hotteok, tteokbokki, and more Korean street snacks.

Day 6 – Discover Jeonju, the Culinary and Makgeolli Heaven

After Day 5, experience your peaceful temple stay at Geumsunsa Temple. On Day 6, you’ll head to Jeonju, often called the cultural and culinary heart of Korea. Once you arrive, kick things off with a traditional bibimbap lunch, the city’s most iconic dish. Jeonju is the birthplace of bibimbap, and there’s no better place to try it! One of our favourite versions is Dolsot Bibimbap, served sizzling in a hot stone pot with a colourful mix of rice, vegetables, egg, and meat. Don’t forget to mix it well before digging in!

After lunch, feel free to take it slow and explore the charming streets of Jeonju Hanok Village.

You can check into your accommodation from 3 PM, so you’ll have time to wander around and take in the beautiful hanok architecture, artisan shops, and quaint cafés. If you’re interested in history, visit Gyeonggijeon Shrine, home to the portrait of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon Dynasty. It’s a beautiful and peaceful spot to explore Korea’s royal heritage, and entry is just 3,000 KRW!

In the evening, you might want to experience Jeonju’s lively local drinking culture. Drop by Makgeolli Alley, where you can enjoy Korea’s traditional rice wine paired with a table full of side dishes. Or, if you wish to go for a relaxed drink, head to Nomadic Beer Garden, where they brew the beer themselves.

Whether you’re into food, culture, or just soaking in the local vibe, Jeonju is the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a slower side of South Korea.

Day 8 – Dive into History on Your Free Day in Gyeongju

Known as “the museum without walls”, Gyeongju is a history lover’s dream. This ancient capital of the Silla dynasty is rich with cultural treasures and scenic sites. During your free day, stroll through Tumuli Park to see the giant grassy burial mounds, or spend a few hours at the Gyeongju National Museum learning about Korea’s royal past.

For a peaceful moment, visit Anapji Pond at sunset or wander around the Gyeongju Historic Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage site. When hunger calls, don’t miss the city’s beloved dishes. Try galbijjim (braised beef short ribs), dakkalguksu (chicken noodle soup), or ssambap (rice wrapped in lettuce with side dishes). Craving comfort food? Gyeongju’s Old City even has a top-rated artisan pizza spot.

Day 9 – Make the Most of Your Last Day in Busan

As your tour winds down, spend a relaxed afternoon soaking up the vibrant charm of Busan. Start with a visit to Gamcheon Cultural Village, famous for its pastel-painted houses and murals. Or head to Haedong Yonggungsa, a breathtaking seaside temple perfect for quiet reflection and stunning photos.

Want to truly relax? Treat yourself to a few hours at a traditional jjimjilbang (Korean spa), complete with saunas, hot baths, and maybe even a cheeky nap room. If you’re hungry, BIFF Square is a street food heaven. Try the famous hotteok, grilled fish at Jagalchi Market, or a steaming bowl of dwaeji gukbap (pork soup rice). Cool off with patbingsu, Korea’s iconic shaved ice dessert.

Need more options? Check out the Lotte Department Store food hall, or follow your nose through backstreets for hidden local gems.
