FAQs

Let’s go through the basics before you meet us on your big adventure to Japan. You are about to set off into one of the most spectacular places on the planet and we want to make sure you’re all ready! If you still have further questions after reading through this section then please get in touch with one of the friendly OLA team who are here to answer all your questions.

What is the age range of this tour?

Most of our guests come from all over the world and are a mix of ages. To take part in our tours you must be over the age of 18, but we don’t have an upper age limit. While most of our guests are aged between 21-35 years old, we are happy for any age to join our tours if they want to experience our adventurous “flashpacking” style of travel. Our tours are perfect for people of different ages and backgrounds to share travel experiences with like-minded fellow travellers.

What fitness level is required to join this tour?

There will be a lot of walking in Japan – Notably in the cities Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka. In Tokyo we do upwards of 20,000 steps on Day 2 & 3, and if you explore in your free time in addition you could hit 30,000!

Please pack comfortable walking shoes.
As we travel to our next destinations with our luggage using Bullet Trains & Scenic trains, you will be required to carry your own luggage through the stations. There will be one or two spots without an escalator or elevator, so you should be able to carry your luggage up one flight of stairs.

There is one hike included on the trip which is 25 minutes to the top, on Day 9 morning for Monkey Mountain in Arashiyama.

How much free time is there on this trip?

Our days are action packed including all the activities, but we still include free time in Tokyo, Takayama, Kyoto, & Osaka so you can check off your own bucket-list 🙂 We want to make sure you are able to explore as well!
If there is any bucket list item you want to complete & aren’t sure if you have time, please contact the guide before the day and let them know your plans and they will be able to help you!

What should I pack?

  • Comfortable walking shoes & ready-to-walk legs are a must!
  • Travel Adaptor, Japan is Type A socket.
  • Portable Battery Charger – Great to use for your phone
  • In October in Takayama in the evening it can be cold, potentially around 10 degrees, so something warm for that, but the rest of the weather should be around 20 degrees
  • Extra room in the suitcase! Japanese products & souvenirs are amazing quality, so you will probably want to bring lots of things back home.

You can buy umbrellas easily & cheap at any convenient store, but if you want to bring a light rainproof jacket that is always great.

Is a suitcase or backpack better?

Either one is fine! We will be carrying our bags throughout the stations to take the trains to the next destinations, and in 1 or 2 spots there is no escalator/elevator convenient, so as long as you can carry your luggage up a flight of stairs then you are fine to bring either.

Backpacks are more convenient during the stations, however rolling the suitcase down the streets is also convenient, whatever you prefer.

We are staying in twin rooms. How will people be paired?

The room arrangement for the solo travellers will be paired by the same gender. In addition we may put similar ages together. This is just as a random pairing for our first accommodation, afterwards it is up to the guests if you want to switch the room arrangements around.

Also if you are in the group chat beforehand and wish to choose your room arrangement prior we can do this.

Do we have ensuite bathrooms in each hotel?

We will have an ensuite bathroom in all of the accommodations except the traditional Guest House Style accommodation in Hakone on Day 4 for 1 night.

Do we have to carry our luggage around with us each day? Is there a luggage delivery service on this trip?

On the days we travel to new destinations which are Day 4, 5 , 6, & Day 9, we will be travelling with our luggage to the stations & to the new accommodations.

There is not a luggage delivery that will bring you to each new location, but if you wish to send your luggage from Tokyo to meet you in Osaka/Kyoto & carry a smaller bag with you in between then this is possible.

Where should I fly into?

You can fly into either Narita or Haneda Airport. Both are convenient to get to Asakusa

How does airport transportation work?

Airport transportation is very convenient, efficient, & affordable in Japan! While it is not included in the price, the tickets range from 8-20 USD, depending on arriving at Narita or Haneda, or departing from Itami or Kansai in Osaka at the end of the trip.

You will have easy to follow instructions for taking the train to your starting accommodation, and for those arriving within certain hours one of the guides or hosts can greet you at the airport!

The tour doesn’t end in Tokyo, is the return to Tokyo included?

The tour finishes in Osaka & the return to Tokyo is not included in the price.

You are able to add-on your return Bullet Train ticket to Tokyo, which means we will reserve and hold the ticket for you matching your flight time.

You are able to fly out of out of Osaka airports Itami or Kansai, both are convenient from our accommodation. Or you can fly out of Tokyo & take the bullet train back. We recommend booking flights from Tokyo after 4 P.M on the final day of the tour.

We are travelling together, can we upgrade to having a private room for all nights?

The room arrangements are Twin or Double (When available) therefore no need to upgrade if you are traveling in two.

We are not able to offer single upgrades on this trip.

One of the things I want to do while in Japan is have a traditional onsen experience, is that included in this tour?

There will be an option for the onsen. The best time to do this will be in Takayama on Day 5. There will be a traditional onsen available at our hotel.

Alternatively there are other public baths available in Takayama on Day 5 if you wish to visit a different one.

Can you cater for my dietary requirements on this trip?

All dietary requirements can be catered for, please make sure to include this in your booking information.

How much spending money do I need for this tour?

Around 450-550 USD, or 400 Euro – 500 Euro
You can get Breaky + 2 izakaya/restaurant meals, coffee, snacks, 2 alcoholic drinks easily each day with 500 euro across the 11 days. Bring extra for all the souvenirs

How long are the travel times?

Some metro rides are about 30 minutes in the cities. Our trains between destinations are around 90 minutes, with our longest train being the scenic train from Nagoya to Takayama on Day 5 at just over 2 hours.

Is there a payment plan?

Absolutely! You can pay in any installment amounts you like, provided that the full balance is paid no later than 60 days prior to departure.

Simply send us your booking reference and the amount you would like to pay to enquiries@onelifeadventures.com.au and we can send you a payment link for the exact amount!

Will you help with booking the flights and airport transfer?

There will be a WhatsApp group created for those booked onto the trip where Our TravelTreats can offer assistance for things like flights & insurance. We want to remind you that this is only assistance and Our TravelTreats & One Life Adventures cannot be held responsible for any errors in the flight bookings & insurance, the booking will ultimately be up to you.
