Travel with Jackie

@lifelikejacki

Hi fellow travel lovers! I hope most of you know a little about me already, but for those who don’t, I’m Jackie, a 27-year-old Brit with a backpack attempting to see every corner of this beautiful planet we call home. Whilst also trying to figure out life and avoiding those adult responsibilities (not quite sure I ever want a mortgage).

I visited Sri Lanka late last year and was enamoured by it. It’s one of those places you can visit for the first time yet somehow it feels immediately like home. It has so much to offer from its history to its landscapes, wildlife and culture. It is home to one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, affordable safaris, beautiful beaches, a surf culture, a party scene and a vibrant backpacker scene.

It also happens to be a 90-minute flight from the Maldives, that picture-perfect island paradise that you thought was only for the insanely rich and honeymooners – not anymore! Me and One Life Adventures are on a mission to make this paradise on Earth more accessible to everyone!

I truly hope to see you in Sri Lanka, and maybe even the Maldives! And can’t wait to leave this trip with lifelong friendships.

FAQs

Before you set out with us on the trip of a lifetime, we want to go over a few things. Sri Lanka is an amazing country with so much to offer, but like with most countries in Asia, things sometimes don’t go according to plan. This is why we may have to slightly alter the itinerary if we need to. One Life is committed to giving you the best possible experience, so if we need to change something we’ll make sure we’ll replace it with something equally awesome!

Sri Lanka

What is the age range of the tour?

We have an age range of 18 – 45 years old for our tours. Most of our guests are aged between 21-35 years old, though this range varies to slightly older with certain destinations, and are looking to experience our adventurous “flashpacking” style of travel. Our tours are perfect for people of all different backgrounds to share travel experiences with like-minded conscious fellow travellers.

I am completing my visa application and it’s asking for the address on my first night, can you tell me what it is?

The address is 185 Porutota Rd, Negombo 11500, Sri Lanka.

How much spending money do you recommend for this tour?

We recommend a minimum of $400 AUD for the full twelve days, but it depends on what kind of spender you are. We include a spending guide in your welcome pack. You should bear in mind that tips are expected in Sri Lanka, they are not compulsory but there is very much a tipping culture for around 10% of the bill. On our trips we usually form a tipping kitty between everyone and split it between the restaurants and hotels that we visit.

Do I need to arrive at a certain time to get the airport pick up?

No, you can arrive whenever! As long as you arrive on day 1, we will arrange a pick up for you. Just let us know your arrival details once your flights are confirmed.

I am arriving a day early, can I still get an airport pick up?

Unfortunately not. Airport pickups are on day 1 of the tour only. We do however give you very simple instructions on how best to get from the airport to Beacon Beach Hotel in your information pack so you shouldn’t have any trouble!

Do I need to bring temple wear?

Yes you will need to bring temple wear for use at various points throughout the tour. You’ll need to cover your legs, shoulders & chest so for men remember to wear t-shirts rather than singlets and for women, sarongs are ideal to drape over your shoulders.

Do I need to bring hiking gear?

Ideally yes, sandals and some trainers/running shoes would be fine.

Can I bring a 25kg suitcase?

While we really don’t recommend bringing such a large or heavy suitcase, we can make it work. It will be a bit awkward or uncomfortable at times but if it’s absolutely necessary for you to have it then we can make it work. Our recommendation is to bring a backpack no more than 20kg.

I’ve seen that you ride bikes on the Sri Lanka tour, can I skip this part as I can’t ride a bike?

Yes you can skip the bike ride if you prefer, you can actually join the group in a tuk tuk instead so you don’t miss out on the views or the school visit!

I’ve seen the tour starts in Negombo, but I can only fly into Colombo - is this okay?

Yes, Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport is actually located in Negombo, so as long as we have your flight details and you arrive on day 1, you will be picked up.

Can you cater for my dietary requirements on this trip?

Yes, we can cater for most dietary requirements. Please notify us prior to arriving on day 1 so we can arrange this for you.

I love the sound of the itinerary, but I’m going to go further South afterwards so would like to leave the tour early instead of going back up to Colombo - is this okay?

Absolutely, you can finish the tour wherever you like! Just bear in mind that you’ll miss out on some of the activities and accommodation and there won’t be a refund for those.

Maldives Extension

Do I need a visa?

The journey from Colombo to Male airport takes roughly one hour. Thankfully, entry into the Maldives does not require a prior visa and based on immigration requirements, entry permits will be granted on arrival.

Visitors of all nationalities are granted entry with a free 30 day visa provided you have proof of departure and a confirmed hotel reservation or $100 USD in cash.

Are flights included from Sri Lanka (Colombo) to Maldives (Male)?

To give you more flexibility on the time you’d like to spend in Colombo on day 12 in Sri Lanka, we feel it’s best to leave booking flights to our travellers, this way you can choose when best suits you. We would suggest choosing a flight that lands in Male no later than 3 or 4pm to allow you time to check in and join the Male walking tour that afternoon/evening.

How long does it take to get back to Male (MLE) airport from Maafushi? (What time shall I book my flight out of Maldives?)

Speedboats depart from Maafushi Jetty regularly throughout the day. Last speedboat is at 20:00. Speedboats are operated by third parties and timings can be subject to change. The journey time is approximately 40 minutes. With weather/ocean conditions to bear in mind, we suggest purchasing a flight out of MLE in the afternoon to avoid any possible delays.

How will I reach the hotel from the airport?

Your local tour guide will greet you at the airport. They will help you transfer to the hotel in Hulhumale for your first night.

The speedboat transfer will depart 3x daily at:
09:30 // 13:30 // 17:30 (departing from Jetty No.5). We recommend checking your flight arrival time in accordance with these departure times.

What time shall I book my flight out of the Maldives?

We would recommend booking your flight no earlier than mid-afternoon to allow for any unexpected delays. On arriving at Maafushi on day 2, please inform the check in staff of your departure flight time so they can organise your speedboat on day 5 back to Male airport.

Can I get out spending money when I arrive in The Maldives?

The currency used in the Maldives is the Rufiyaa (Rf) however most visitors never even see rufiyaa, as US dollars are accepted everywhere.

We highly recommend withdrawing USD prior to arriving in the Maldives as there is only 1 ATM on Maafushi Island which will only dispense Maldivian currency.

Alternatively, you will have time to withdraw money in Male at the airport.

How much spending money should I bring?

On average our travellers find that they spend around $30 USD a day. Some optional activities like water sports on day 3 can cost up to $50 USD per person.

Can I drink alcohol while I'm there?

The Maldives is an Islamic nation and alcohol can only be enjoyed in the privacy of a resort or at the airport. In some special circumstances it is allowed on tourist boats that operate.

Can I wear a bikini?

You are able to wear a bikini in the resorts and when out on a boat but not on the first night in Hulhumale.

What timezone is The Maldives?

The Maldives is GMT+5:00

Please note the Maldives is 30 minutes behind Sri Lanka.

What additional activities can I do in the Maldives and what's the average cost? (*Prices are subject to change provided to act as guidance only)

Resort Visit from $85USD
Motor Water Sports $70-$120USD
Diving from $75USD
Discover Scuba Dive from $100USD
Other excursions $35-$150USD
